ABOUT THE SHOWS

Peter and the Starcatcher

This Tony-nominated play upends the century-old story of how a miserable orphan comes to be The Boy Who Would Not Grow Up (a.k.a. Peter Pan). A wildly theatrical adaptation featuring over a dozen actors portraying more than 100 unforgettable characters, Peter and The Starcatcher uses ingenious stagecraft and the limitless possibilities of imagination to bring the story to life.

A young orphan and his mates are to be shipped off from Victorian England to a distant island ruled by the evil King Zarboff. They know nothing of the mysterious trunk in the captain’s cabin, containing a precious, otherworldly cargo. At sea, the boys are discovered by a precocious young girl named Molly, a Starcatcher-in-training, who realizes that the trunk’s precious cargo is starstuff, a celestial substance so powerful it must never fall into the wrong hands. The journey quickly becomes a thrilling adventure when the ship is taken over by pirates – led by the fearsome Black Stache (the future Captain Hook,) a villain determined to claim the trunk and its treasure for his own.

From marauding pirates and jungle tyrants to unwilling comrades and unlikely heroes, Peter and the Starcatcher utilizes such performing techniques as story-theatre, clowning, improvisation, puppetry, music, and audience participation, to playfully explore the depths of greed and despair, and the bonds of friendship, duty, and love.

Directed by GCC Theatre faculty Sandy Nagar and presented with the audience sitting onstage and surrounding the performers and action on three sides, this production promises to be both a challenging and rewarding experience for performers, and an incredibly moving, exciting, and entertaining show for audiences.

Auditions for Peter and The Starcatcher will be on September 9th. For audition info reach out to Sandy Nagar at sanagar@montenegroflights.net, check the bulletin board outside the theater Scene Shop (E115) in the Arts Center, or stop by the Forum Players table at the Club Fair on September 4th.

Little Shop of Horrors

A deviously delicious Broadway and Hollywood sci-fi smash musical, Little Shop of Horrors has devoured the hearts of theatre goers for over 40 years. Howard Ashman and Alan Menken (Disney’s The Little Mermaid, Beauty and The Beast, and Aladdin) are the creative geniuses behind what has become one of the most popular shows in the world.

In the run-down neighborhood of Skid Row, on the day of a total eclipse of the sun, meek, down-and-out floral assistant Seymour Krelborn mysteriously acquires a never-before-seen exotic plant. He takes it home to his room in the basement of Mushnik’s Flower Shop and begins to care for the plant he affectionately names “Audrey II” – after his beautiful but perpetually suffering coworker crush, Audrey. As he tends to the plant, Seymour makes the horrific discovery that in order for the plant to grow, he must feed it…BLOOD!  As it grows bigger, the foul-mouthed, R&B-singing, carnivorous Audrey II promises Seymour fame and fortune beyond his wildest dreams as long as he keeps feeding it. But the plant doesn’t just want blood…It wants FLESH! Eventually Audrey II’s out of this world origins and intent towards global domination are revealed as Seymour must consider making the ultimate sacrifice to save the woman he loves and the world!

With music inspired by 1950’s Rock-n-Roll, 1960’s Motown, and 1970’s Funk and R&B,  Little Shop Of Horrors was one of the longest-running Off-Broadway shows and has been produced worldwide to incredible success. Paying homage to 1950’s sci-fi and horror B-movies like Invasion of the Body Snatchers, It Came from Outer Space, and Creature from the Black Lagoon, this charmingly tongue-in-cheek comedy musical is a favorite among musical theatre performers and audiences.

Little Shop of Horrors will be directed by GCC Department of Fine & Performing Arts Chair Maryanne Arena, and presented with a full, live rock band. Performers are sure to have a blast telling this outrageous fantasy story with iconic and infectious songs such as “Feed Me,” “Somewhere That’s Green,” and “Suddenly Seymour.”
