Typography and Layout

Introduces the basics of using type in the graphic arts. Students clarify and enhance visual messages through the use of type and visual placement (layout) of information. Two class hours, two studio hours. Prerequisites: ART105 and ART209.

Course Learning Outcomes:

1. Explain the basic elements of design and how those elements control the flow and impact of information.
2. Apply the basic elements of design to a variety of different design projects.
3. Describe basic characteristics of type families and their uses.
4. Employ fonts effectively using the principles of concord, contrast, and conflict.
5. Set leading and kerning within a document.
6. Distinguish between ineffectual type and effective use of type through the examination of real-world examples or redesign of ineffectual ads.
7. Set body copy that is readable and uses appropriate fonts and formatting.
8. Control the technical aspects of printing (resolution, file types for printing, fonts, media for transport, etc.).
9. Create a design that meets a client’s need.
